The research team led by Prof. Jin Hoi Kim of the Department of Animal Science & Technology, Konkuk University (KU) College of Animal Bioscience & Technology, has been selected as a Science Research Center (SRC) by the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
The selection of SRC is based on the research team's capacity to resolve scientific dilemmas by discovering and cultivating outstanding research groups and to play a strategic and pivotal role in the nation's R&D in the sciences, engineering, fisheries science, basic medical science, and convergence science. The competition for the sciences including animal sciences, botany, microbiology, agriculture, fisheries, biology, and basic and applied bioengineering has been more intense than ever, since no team has been selected in this area for the previous three years and only one team is appointed at a time.
The SRC at KU is named the Humanized Pig Research Center and will be operated with seven KU professors (Professors Jin Hoi Kim, Jeong Tae Do, Han Geuk Seo, Chan Kyu Park, Ssang-Goo Cho, Hyuk Song, and Hojae Bae) as well as three researchers from Dankook University, Konyang University, and Sejong University. From June 1, 2015, the center will be funded with a total of 8.6 billion KRW (or approximately 7.75 million USD) for a maximum of seven years.
The Humanized Pig Research Center will be targeting at, firstly, developing a humanized pig which possesses human's immune system by the transplanting of human hematopoietic stem cell to the immunodeficient pig lacking immune rejection response developed by the team led by Prof. Kim, a world-renowned scholar in the field of transgenic and cloned animals. The center then aims to develop patient-tailored transgenic pigs by transplanting human stem cell and tissues of incurable and common illnesses.
