The Graduate School at Konkuk University and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) introduced a joint program with the goal of producing physician-scientists who will lead the country’s medical industry. The program is designed for doctors, dentists, and Korean medicine doctors, and will be available from Fall 2016.
Translational research, which bridges basic science and clinical research, has been receiving much attention recently. In particular, there has been an increasing demand for experts capable of conducting translational research from both domestic and foreign biotechnology firms as well as research centers conducting clinical trials. The joint program with KIST aims to train experts capable of conducting such research in a creative manner. Areas of studies include: Infection and Immunology, Metabolism and Aging, Molecular Genetics and Pathology, Social Medicine, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience, Tumor Biology, Stem Cell Translational Medicine, Translational Medicine and Pharmacology, and Form and Physiology. Both professors from KU’s medical school and KIST research professors will be newly appointed to educate students and carry out research.
Students in the program will participate in many projects through the medical school’s “BK21 Plus Translational Medicine Scientist” program, the Bioimaging Technology Center by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the biomedical technology development project by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning as well as KIST. Tuition will be exempted for all students and stipends will be provided to students who participate in research. The application deadline for the program is May 13.
