On May 10, Konkuk University (KU) held the 2016 Bio Symposium to celebrate its 70th anniversary at the New Millennium Hall. Renowned scholars in medicine and biological sciences, including Nobel Laureate Roger Kornberg, Dr. Peter Wright of the Scripps Research Institute, Professor Mario Amzel of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and University of Michigan’s Professor Fei Wen, were invited to the event as guest speakers.Professor Kornberg, who is also a distinguished professor at KU conducting joint research with the Global Lab, spoke on the topic of chromatin and transcription. Professor Amzel’s presentation was titled “Activation of PI3Kα by Physiological Effectors and by Oncogenic Mutations.” KU’s Department of Biological Sciences and Johns Hopkins’ medical school has signed an MOU for joint research. Dr. Wright delivered a presentation titled “The Role of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins in Cellular Signaling and Regulation.” The guest speakers held discussions on recent developments and the future of biological and pharmaceutical research with Professor Yangmee Kim of the Department of Systems Biotechnology, Professor Lin-Woo Kang of the Department of Biological Sciences, and Professor Jung Kul Lee of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Professor Yangmee Kim, who has plans for joint research with Dr. Wright, spoke on the topic of “Development of Antibiotics against Multi-Drug Resistant Bacteria Using In-silico Screening and NMR Spectroscopy.”KU Foundation Chairperson Kyung-hee Kim and KU President Heeyoung Song were also in attendance to encourage the researchers. They particularly thanked the guest speakers for visiting from overseas, and said they hoped that the symposium would be facilitate KU’s research in bioscience. Dr. Choong Hwan Lee, the dean of the College of Bioscience & Biotechnology said, “I hope the symposium would promote collaboration among researchers in the field and serve as a stepping stone for joint research with prominent research centers established in the future.”
