On July 22, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) announced that Dr. Seongjoo Lee of the Department of Biological Sciences was selected for the 2016 Presidential Post-Doctoral Fellowship by the National Research Foundation of Korea. As an initiative to support the next generation of researchers, the foundation awards fellowships to those under the age of 39.
Until the end of 2020, Dr. Lee will receive a total of approximately 596 million won in funding to study the role of autophagy in the mechanism of depression and anti-depression medication. Dr. Lee previously researched rare neurological disorders that cause paraplegia at the National Institute of Health in the United States. She also studied various functions of proteins that cause diseases through molecular and cellular analysis. From the spring of this year, Dr. Lee joined Professor Chi Hye Chung’s lab at KU, which examines the formation of traumatic memories, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
“Dr. Lee’s research, which attempts to find markers for depression at the cellular level, is innovative,” said Professor Chung. “Through synergy in cellular and molecular biology as well as behavioral and neurophysiology, it will be a step toward finding the cause of depression.”
