On September 23, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) established the Cloud Computing for Artificial Intelligence Research Center (CLAIR). Approximately 100 people, including KU President Sang-Gi Min, Director-General of ICT Industry Policy at the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning Wan-young Jung, Institute for Information & Communications Technology Promotion President Sang-hong Lee as well as Konkuk faculty and students attended the opening ceremony.
Located at the New Engineering Building on campus, CLAIR will receive KRW 3.9 billion in research funding over four years from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. Last July, Professor Doo-Hyun Kim of the Department of Internet and Multimedia Engineering was selected by the ministry for the 2016 Information Technology Research Center project in the cloud computing field. A total of 11 professors, 44 students, and 28 researchers from KU, Sogang University and Dongkuk University will be part of CLAIR. Seven AI companies—Crossent, wisenut, Geminisoft, Innogrid, NamuTech, VIM, and U2N—will also be involved. CLAIR plans on introducing a co-op program through which students can gain academic credit for practical training and work closely with the government’s Creative Economy Innovation Center.
In his congratulatory remarks, President Min emphasized that KU intends to educate the next generation of leaders who could being changes to the industry with the PRIME project. “CLAIR will play a pivotal role for the Center for Integrated Science and Technology especially in terms of increasing synergy between undergraduate and graduate programs,” he said. “AI and cloud computing will become common denominators across various science and technology sectors, so we have very high expectations for the research center.”
