On July 8, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) announced that research by Veterinary Pharmacology Professor Ho-Chul Shin on detecting residuals of drugs on animal was selected by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning as one of the “100 Outstanding National R&D Projects.” The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to emphasize the importance of R&D and encourage scientists and researchers.Despite increased imports of meat products and heightened concern over their safety, a number of veterinary drugs have been exempted from regulations. With a positive list system to be introduced soon, improvements in testing microorganisms as well as widening the scope of analysis became particularly necessary for timely inspections. Against this backdrop, Professor Shin has developed methods to test 45 types of veterinary drugs that were approved and distributed, yet without standards for regulation. A user-friendly test utilizing magnetic nanoparticles, in particular, detects residual antibiotics in a short period, allowing widespread use in slaughterhouses.
