Thanks to its drive for innovation in education and improving research capacity, Konkuk University has been selected for a string of large-scale projects funded by the Korean government. The university has been chosen for the Next Generation Engineer, Basic Research Lab, Global Research Lab, and Environmental Industry Technology Development projects recently in addition to the Program for Industrial Needs-Matched Education (PRIME) project last year and the Leaders in Industry University Cooperation (LINC+) project in April.
Next Generation Engineer Project
As part of a consortium with Hanyang University, the College of Engineering at Konkuk University will receive 4.2 billion won in government funding across five years through the Next Generation Engineer Project. The National Research Foundation of Korea aims to raise new leaders by identifying industries with potential and encouraging joint research through the project. The two universities will focus on new materials related to energy and convergence of technologies. Konkuk plans on establishing a technology center, developing a curriculum with experts in the field, and conducting research on renewable energy, especially in relation to improving efficiency and safety.
Basic Research Lab Project
A research team led by Professor Jung Kul Lee of the Department of Chemical Engineering will receive 1.4 billion won over three years as part of the Basic Research Lab project by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Research Foundation of Korea. Professors Ji Bong Joo and Ki Chul Kim of the chemical engineering department will also join the research project, which will focus on converting carbon dioxide using biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology, and energy technology. In particular, the research team will develop technologies that will convert greenhouse gases into valuable compounds as well as new protein engineering approaches.
Global Research Lab Project
Professor Dae-Jin Yun of the Department of Biomedical Science and Engineering at the Konkuk Institute of Technology will join the Global Research Lab Project by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The project selects creative and challenging subjects to strengthen global partnerships and improve Korea’s research capacity. Professor Yun’s project, which will research plant reaction to environmental stress following climate change, was among the eight that were selected out of the 75 applications and will receive 2.8 billion won over six years.
Appointed as a faculty member at Konkuk University this semester, Professor Yun has published his research in Cell, Nature Genetics, Molecular Cell, and Nature Communications and received awards from the Korean Society for Plant Biotechnology, Korean Society of Plant Biologists, and Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies. In 2013, Professor Yun became the youngest member joining the Korean Academy of Science and Technology in his field.
Environmental Industry Technology Development Project
A research team led by Professor Ki Young Park of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Plant Engineering will be participating in the Environmental Industry Technology Development project by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute. The project promotes environmental technologies that could be applied or has potential for commercialization in the short term to boost competitiveness of the industry. Professor Park’s research team will receive 1.5 billion won over three years to develop technologies to treat plating wastewater.
