The book ‘Reading the World with Ancient Maps’ by Professor Changmo Choi from Sanghuh College of Konkuk University was selected as the ‘Best Academic Books of 2020’ by the Ministry of Education and the National Academy of Sciences.
Professor Choi, who is acknowledged as one of the most prestigious authorities on Middle East Studies, considers a map as an expression of social discourse and attempts to understand the contents in the context of political power. Digital copies of all the ancient maps are included by the author with his visit to Oxford University in England and Ryukoku University in Japan, and he also presents detailed explanation and creative interpretation of each map.
Professor Choi had visited the Omiya Library of Ryukoku University and checked <혼일강리역대국도지도> by himself. The intellectual attention towards Africa and Arabia expressed in <혼일강리역대국도지도> expanded to the research of world maps in medieval Islamic and Christian culture.During his stay at Oxford University, he conducted research on world maps designed in medieval Islamic and Christian culture. Based on the research, this book was published as a final result of the study.Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and the National Academy of Sciences are sharing excellent academic performances by distributing outstanding books to universities each year as well as supporting the research of basic academic fields and writing activities.As of this year, 271 of 3,284 first editions by 381 publishers are selected as best academic books. These books include topics of anthropology with 66, social science of 66, Korean studies of 36, natural science of 73 books, and so on. A list of the selected books can be found on the website of the National Academy of Sciences (www.nas.go.kr).The selection of these books was made through multi-level evaluation by referee consisting of 107 members of the National Academy of Sciences and professionals. The is a result of comprehensive consideration of professionalism, originality, and level of academic contribution.
