Professor Jung-hun Woo, a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Konkuk University’s College of Engineering, received a presidential commendation on September 7, ‘The 1st International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’ officially adopted by UN, for his contribution of developing an emission inventory for air pollutants and greenhouse gases first ever in Korea. On December 19, 2019, the 74th UN General Assembly accepted the proposal of Republic of Korea and adopted September 7 as ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’. As welcoming the first ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs held various events to commemorate the day (the week of Clean Air for Blue Skies, September 4-11) and awarded government rewards to seven figures including Professor Woo from Konkuk University for the achievement of preserving the air environment.Professor Woo is the first to contribute to scientific understanding of fine dust phenomena in Northeast Asia and Korea by setting the foundation for calculating air pollution information on a par with developed countries such as Japan and Europe, which developed emission inventories for air pollutants and greenhouse gases.
He has also contributed to scientific understanding and political resolution of fine dust phenomena in Northeast Asia and Korea by providing emission information to Korea-U.S. Joint Air Quality Survey (KORUS-AQ), Korea-China-Japan Environment Ministry's Long-Range Movement Research (LTP), and the UN's Northeast Asia Clean Air Partnership (NEACAP).
Professor Woo is a member of the Presidential Council on Climate and Environment, a civilian member of the Prime Minister's Special Measures Committee on Fine Dust, a member of the U.N.'s Northeast Asia Clean Air Partnership (NECAP), and a manager of emission division of the NASA-NIER Korea-U.S. Joint Air Quality Research (KORUS-AQ) in Korea. He has also served an expert on reducing emissions (MR) of IPCC national emissions.
‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’has such significance in that it is the first official commemoration day of UN proposed by Republic of Korea as well as its achievement by the international community in response to the suggestions of our people and the government. In August, 2019, the participants of National Climate Conference (chairman; Ban Ki-moon) suggested the establishment of ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’. Later in September, President Moon Jae-in proposed the designation of ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’ to international community in a keynote speech of Climate Action Summit of UN in New York. On December 19th of the same year, the resolution ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’was adopted at the 74th UN General Assembly. In addition, the government revised some of the regulations on various commemoration days and designated ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’as a national holiday. The theme of the first ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’ determined by UNEP this year is “Clean Air for All”. The meaning of this theme is that we should all endeavor for clean air at home, work, society, government and across borders as we are all together connected with the air we breathe.
