On Feb. 17, 2014, Konkuk University (KU) held an opening ceremony of Konkuk Technology Holdings with a fund of 2.86 million USD, which is to serve as a channel of creating profit from the University's research outcomes. The investment was primarily based on two commercializable technologies developed by KU professors, with a total estimated value of 2.5 million USD. The rest was covered by the KU Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation.
At the opening ceremony, KU President Heeyoung Song said, "We expect that Konkuk Technology Holdings will build a virtuous circle of R&D, as universities play a more significant role in the research area. We will spare no effort to cultivate creative businesses that are conducive to the University's competitiveness."
The CEO position will be assumed by Dr. Jung-Hyang Sur, President of the KU Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation. Meanwhile, the company will be composed of two subsidiaries, each possessing Prof. Chang-Seon Song's (KU College of Veterinary Medicine) next-generation veterinary vaccine development technology from which cost-effective and highly immunogenic vaccines can be made by utilizing heat-treatment attenuation technology, and Prof. Chang Kyu Park's (KU College of Engineering) 'i-Fashion' technology, a system that produces tailored clothes using 3D human body scan data. The KU Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation plans to selectively choose promising technologies via annual technology competitions and transfer them to Konkuk Technology Holdings through a TF team.
"We will yield tangible business outcomes in the biofield by 2016; afterwards, we will endeavor to establish a virtuous cycle of commercialization of research outcomes through vigorous exploration and investment attraction," said Dr. Sur, CEO of Konkuk Technology Holdings.
