Research Team at KU Investigates New Mechanism for Vascular Dementia

<p>The research team headed by Prof. Jongmin Lee (Dept. of Rehabilitation Medicine, Konkuk University Medical Center) and Prof. Dong-Hee Choi of Konkuk University (KU) School of Medicine published findings on a protein causing vascular dementia.</p> <p>The research was funded by the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Research Foundation of Korea. The results were published online (Feb. 6, 2014) in <em>Antioxidants and Redox Signaling</em>, an international scientific journal focusing on internal secretion and metabolism.</p> <p>*Title of Article: "NADPH Oxidase 1, a Novel Molecular Source of ROS in Hippocampal Neuronal Death of Vascular Dementia"</p> <p>The KU research team has discovered that the oxidative stress created by the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 1 (Nox1) induces hippocampal neuronal cell death through DNA oxidation.
