The research team headed by Prof. Jongmin Lee (Dept. of Rehabilitation Medicine, Konkuk University Medical Center) and Prof. Dong-Hee Choi of Konkuk University (KU) School of Medicine published findings on a protein causing vascular dementia.
The research was funded by the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Research Foundation of Korea. The results were published online (Feb. 6, 2014) in Antioxidants and Redox Signaling, an international scientific journal focusing on internal secretion and metabolism.
*Title of Article: "NADPH Oxidase 1, a Novel Molecular Source of ROS in Hippocampal Neuronal Death of Vascular Dementia"
The KU research team has discovered that the oxidative stress created by the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 1 (Nox1) induces hippocampal neuronal cell death through DNA oxidation. Through this research, further research for the prevention and treatment of vascular dementia by the method of suppressing the activation of Nox1 is expected to follow.
