On July 2, 2013, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for comprehensive and mutual cooperation on new drug development using stem cells was concluded between Prof. Dong Wook Han of the Dept. of Stem Cell Biology, Graduate School of Medicine, Konkuk University (KU), and Prof. Louis J. Ignarro of the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, a Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine (1998). The two professors agreed to cooperate in various fields relating to stem cells, including joint research, commercialization of research outcomes, and student exchange.
In 2012, Prof. Han discovered that the forced expression of defined factors could lead to the direct conversion of somatic cells into neural stem cells, namely 'induced neural stem cells.' He published this breakthrough finding in the Cell Stem Cell', a prestigious scientific journal. In Oct. 2012, his work was highlighted as one of the top 10 stem cell articles published in 2011 and 2012, at the annual meeting of the New York Stem Cell Foundation.
Prof. Ignarro was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998, jointly with Dr. Robert F. Furchgott and Dr. Ferid Murad, "for their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system" (Nobelprize.org). During his appointment as KU's University Professor (March 2008 - Nov. 2013), Prof. Ignarro has actively collaborated with research teams at KU to develop novel drugs and establish a next-generation drug screening platform for various neurological diseases.
