Prof. Roger D. Kornberg, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (2006) and Konkuk University (KU) University Professor, visited Korea to give special lectures, participate in an academic symposium, and conduct joint research at KU and other venues.
On May 14, 2014, Prof. Kornberg delivered a keynote speech and gave a special lecture for youth at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (KSBMB).
On the following day, May 25, he delivered a congratulatory address at the 83rd Anniversary Celebration of the Foundation of KU. He also participated in the academic symposium hosted by the College of Bioscience & Biotechnology, where he had conversations with KU students about the career pathways of a scientist and the future of bioscience.
Afterwards, he attended the KU Bio Symposium for Young Scientists, which was co-hosted by graduate research assistants, post-doc fellows, and newly appointed professors at the College of Animal Bioscience & Technology, College of Life & Environmental Sciences, College of Bioscience & Biotechnology, and College of Veterinary Medicine at KU. This was the first occasion in which a group of bio experts and students convened to hold a researcher friendly symposium. Seven presenters including newly appointed professors, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students pursuing the bio field at KU shared their research outcomes.
The presentations were followed by an open discussion with Prof. Kornberg. He advised, "Be persistent, remain optimistic, and follow your own path. I wish you every success." Furthermore, he commented that KU's combination of outstanding bio research personnel and related infrastructure will create synergy effects.
During his visit to Korea, Prof. Kornberg also discussed the research outcomes of the KU Global Lab which he is jointly operating with Prof. Lin-Woo Kang (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Bioscience & Biotechnology) as well as international research trends. The KU Global Lab was jointly established by Prof. Kornberg and Prof. Kang with the aim to maximize bio research outcomes through research cooperation and exchange.
Prof. Kornberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2006) "for his studies of the molecular basis of eukaryotic transcription" (Nobelprize.org). He has been a KU University Professor since 2007, conducting joint research and giving lectures to KU students. As students learn directly from the Nobel Laureate, the educational effect that Prof. Kornberg brings to Konkuk is invaluable.
