Konkuk University (KU) announced on May 1, 2015, that the KU Institute for Publicness Studies (KIPS) has been established to meet the demand for inter- and multidisciplinary research on publicness in various areas of Korean and the global society.
The international society's interest in publicness has been exhibited through different forms. Recently, the issue of inequality raised by French economist Thomas Piketty has become a topic of debate around the globe. In Korea, Michael J. Sandel's book on justice and publicness gathered nationwide attention. The community restoration projects being launched in Korean society are another example of the rising interest in publicness.

KIPS is the first institute founded in Korea which focuses on interdisciplinary research on publicness. It will be establishing core concepts on publicness and presenting publicness models suitable for the Korean society. KIPS ultimately seeks the methodology for enhancing publicness in diverse areas in Korea. Moreover, it will be carrying out joint research with domestic and international researchers and act as a hub institute of publicness in Northeast Asia.
KIPS will adopt a membership system and share research outcomes with fellow member researchers while inducing the participation of prospective scholars and other interested researchers. Prof. Hwang-sun Kang (Public Administration Major, KU College of Political Science), Director of KIPS, said "We will bring the recent rise in interest in publicness to the realm of academics to discover a wealth of research topics and actively provide multidisciplinary support for their research."
