The Global R&D Center (GRDC) Symposium 2014 entitled "Innovative Science and Engineering for Creative Economic Ecosystems" was held during Nov. 10-11, 2014, at the New Millennium Hall on KU Seoul Campus with the participation of eminent domestic and international scholars. The joint international symposium, marking the fifth anniversary since 2010, was jointly organized by the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) and the Korean Association of the Global R&D Centers.
The GRDC Symposium has been firmly established as a venue where the world's greatest scholars gather to discuss the future and direction of international cooperation in science and technology. This year, 40 esteemed speakers and lecturers, including Dr. Dan Shechtman of Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (Nobel Laureate in Physics, 2011), who are advancing science and technology in 22 distinguished research institutes abroad were invited.
Under the 2014 symposium theme, science and technology as a major strategy for realizing creative economy was highlighted. In the "Industry Section," in particular, measures for cooperation between domestic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and overseas research institutes were explored while entry into the overseas market through such cooperation was also covered. Furthermore, an exhibition was held to share the accomplishments of global R&D with around 400 scientists taking part in the symposium.
The GRDC project was initiated in 2005 to strengthen international cooperation networks and facilitate open R&D; currently, it is supporting 24 joint research centers with nine developing countries including the US, Japan, the UK, and Germany.
