Konkuk University (KU) University Professor Roger D. Kornberg, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (2006) and current faculty member at Stanford University, delivered a keynote speech at the 2015 IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) 48th General Assembly and the 45th World Chemistry Congress held at BEXCO, Busan, during his visit to Korea. Prof. Kornberg discussed cooperative measures for joint research and research collaboration in the biosciences with research teams at Konkuk and Gyeongsang National University (GNU).
This year's World Chemistry Congress, hosted by the IUPAC, where around 3,000 scholars and experts of the chemistry field convened, also invited Nobel Prize Winners Andre Geim (2010) of the University of Manchester, Yuan T. Lee (1986) of Academia Sinica, and Akira Suzuki (2010) of Hokkaido University as plenary speakers.
Founded in 1919, the IUPAC is the world's largest academic society with 61 member countries and about 300,000 affiliated members. It was the first time for the World Chemistry Congress to be held in Korea and the second time to be hosted in Asia since the one held in China.
Prior to attending the World Chemistry Congress, Prof. Kornberg visited GNU in Jinju-si to give a special lecture on his life and endeavors until the conferment of the Nobel Prize for high school and university students, while he discussed research cooperation with GNU Systems & Synthetic Agrobiotech Center.
During his visit to Korea, Prof. Kornberg also met with the KU Global Lab headed by Prof. Lin-Woo Kang (Division of Biological Sciences, KU College of Bioscience & Biotechnology), his joint research team at Konkuk. He also held discussions with research teams at the Institute of Bio Convergence (Next-Generation Convergence Research Hub, Advanced Institutes of Convergence Technology (AICT)) and the Medicinal Bioconvergence Research Center (Seoul National University (SNU)).
In 2006, Prof. Kornberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his studies of the molecular basis of eukaryotic transcription" (Nobelprize.org). He was appointed Konkuk's University Professor in 2007 and has since been lecturing and carrying out joint research at KU.
