Konkuk University (KU) held an international seminar on Oct. 12, 2015, at the KU School of Medicine, under the theme “The Role of POU Transcription Factor in Inducing Pluripotency and Totipotency” (unofficial name) with Konkuk’s University Professor Hans R. Schöler as the main speaker. Prof. Schöler is also currently Director at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Germany.
On the next day, October 13, Prof. Schöler held the “Max Planck Partner Group Special Lecture” on the principles and applications of regenerative medicine using stem cells. The lecture was jointly hosted by the KU Lab of Stem Cell Biology led by Prof. Dong Wook Han (KU School of Medicine), a Max Planck Partner Group, and the BK 21 Project Group for Needs-Oriented Graduate Program for Translational Medical Scientists headed by Prof. Jae-Ran Yu (KU School of Medicine).
At the seminar and special lecture, Prof. Schöler presented the latest stem cell research to the audience composed of stem cell and regenerative medicine experts as well as KU medical students. Discussions on possible international joint research between Germany’s Max Planck Institute and the Max Planck Partner Group at KU were also held.
Prof. Schöler is originally from Canada and have taught at Heidelberg University (Germany) and the University of Pennsylvania (US). IN 1989, he had discovered and investigated the functions and characteristics of a vital gene for the reprogramming of stem cells, the Oct4 gene, for the first time in the world. He is recognized as a top scholar in the stem cell area, and approximately 85 million euros have been invested in his research. His research outcomes have been published widely in the journals Science, Nature, and Cell. In recognition of his world-class research, Prof. Schöler was appointed University Professor of the KU School of Medicine in Spring 2014.
The Max Planck Institute has been supporting the researchers of its Partner Groups overseas in order to construct a creative, future-oriented research environment. The research group led by Prof. Han became the 41st Partner Group in 2014.Posted by Eun Jin Cho
