KU introduced a future curriculum that students freely lay out majors and semestersKonkuk University ranked 94th in 'Chosun Ilbo · QS Asia University Evaluation' this year and entered the top 100th in history for the first time. It has risen 19 places from last year. Domestic rankings also rose to three places from 20th to 17th.Konkuk University said, "We have actively coped with drastic changes in the environment surrounding the university, such as inconsistencies between social & industrial demand and university education, a sharp decline in the school-age population, and changes in the jobs caused by the fourth industrial revolution."
◇ Constitutional Improvement by combining the departments
The most prominent future curriculum of Konkuk University is 'PLUS Semester System' and 'Fusion Module Cluster'.The PLUS semester system which was introduced last year, is a system in which students can freely create semesters and curriculums. Students can choose from several semesters, including the existing 8-semester system. The 'Field Practice 2 + 1 Semester' can be practiced in companies during the semester, and the major courses that are lacking can be taken during vacation. The 'Adoption Linkage 3 + 1 Grade' is a system that allows students to study their major until the third grade, work on the field at the fourth grade and get a job at the same time of graduation, and the '4 + 1 Year / It is a system that goes directly to one year post-graduate course after graduate course is taken. There is also a '7 + 1 Self-Design Semester System' which allows students to register for start-ups and employment-related activities outside of the school year. 'Convergence Module Cluster' is a majors curriculum that is reorganized every year to reflect industry demands and student needs.Konkuk University also introduced flipped learning classes, which focus on discussions with faculty and colleagues at the school after study at home first. There are currently 158 discussion courses including 81 flip learning courses. ◇ Spread of Integrated education between Seoul and Glocal campusKonkuk University also operates an associate major that emphasizes humanistic values. Two or three departments are linked to each other so that students can select and complete all their major and related majors.'Human ICT (Information and Communication Technology)' is a discipline dealing with media contents such as virtual reality, mobile games, and big data. The 'Global MICE' specialization course focuses on Meetings, Tourism (Incentive trip), Convention industry and Exhibition & Event industry selected as national new growth business. The 'Mental Counseling Healing' major combines counseling and counseling with humanities to train a counselor who heals the human mind.
In addition, for the convergence education between SW technology and the humanities, which is becoming more and more important, KU has created 9 SW fusion majors in 6 core colleges including the College of Engineering.
KU also introduced a four-step program to enhance the SW capabilities of freshmen. It proceeds in the following order: 0 step (pre-entrance education) → 1st step (introduction to SW) → 2nd step (SW basic education) → 3rd step (SW advanced education).
Konkuk University is also working on integrated education between campuses. The College of Healing Bio Science Consortium' curriculum, which shares educational capacity between Seoul campus and Glocal campus, is representative. The College of Healing Bio Science Consortium has combined the 'Life Science Bioclusters', which are Seoul campus specialization field, and 'ICT fusion and future energy technology based industry' field, with the field of campus specialization. It started for the first time this year, and currently, there are 13 courses at the Seoul campus and 7 courses at the Glocal campus.
Konkuk University is establishing high-tech facilities and infrastructure with a three-year process. In 2016, KU built a high-tech infrastructure such as Smart Factory, Joint Equipment Companies, BIO Experimental Building, Lecture Room, and Cloud Computing Infrastructure. In 2017, KU has built a 490m² laboratory for in-depth study. This year, the third year, KU is creating an environment in which students can discuss and study such as the engineering building, life science building, the Sanghuh research institute, and the Sanghuh memorial library.
