'K Cube, Smart Factory, Career Lounge, Global Lounge'
The high-tech learning-resting spaces constructed by Konkuk University (President Sanggi Min) for students are gaining popularity among students.
■ K'reative Cube of Sanghuh Memorial Library
The K'reative Cube, a 1,100m² open-air study space on the 6th floor of the Sanghuh Memorial Library, is crowded with students even during winter vacation. Students who use the K-Cube are coming to 6th floor of the Sanghuh Memorial Library for individual study as well as for group project meetings for preparation of various competitions during vacation and group study for certification acquirement.
In particular, unlike the library reading room, which is supposed to be quiet, K-cubes are often used by students who prepare for a team project because team members can have discussions, meetings, and exchanges among students.The K-Cube is equipped with a variety of devices such as an electronic blackboard, a one-person media shooting facility, a wireless screen router, a portable beam projector, a camcorder, a camera, a lighting device and a laptop and tablet PC to prepare for team projects, capstone design, and mentoring program smoothly. K-Cube, built as a team-based open learning space to cultivate students with communication skills who can lead the 4th Industrial Revolution era, is now at the engineering building (1,200m²), a life science building (287m²), an animal life science building (186m²) (400m²), and Sanghuh Memorial Library (1,100m²). ■ Prepare for international Programs at Global LoungeOn the first floor of the law school building, ' Lee Soon-deok Global Lounge', similar to K-cubes, was newly constructed. The Global Lounge, which opened to honor Grandmother Lee Soon-deok, who donated all her life's assets to Konkuk University, is an open space where students can have conversation and interact with foreign students. The Global Lounge also has four conference rooms and seminar rooms, which enable students to use for English lectures and tutoring sessions to prepare international exchange programs, such as exchange students, and to use the Global Lounge freely during team-based learning sessions which can lead to data sharing. ■ Career Lounge, study space for job hunting preparationThe Career Lounge, located on the first floor of the Student Center, has opened to provide business recruitment sessions, consultation and recruitment programs for students more smoothly. During the vacation, they are used as seminars for students participating in the winter elite program, individual counseling for students preparing for employment, and study rooms for students preparing for employment.The Career Lounge, located on the first floor of the student hall, has a capacity of 30 square meter, and has a corporate recruitment booth, seminar room, and study space where students can freely discuss and study. If the Job Café on the second floor of the student union building focuses more on providing employment training programs and employment counseling to students, the Career Lounge features more recruiting sessions and recruiting counseling space for more companies.The Career Lounge is open from 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and is free to use as a learning space for students when there is no corporate recruitment and employment program.■ Various Education at KU Smart Factory during vacation
The 'KU Smart Factory', a creative space and production laboratory for students at Konkuk University's new engineering center, also offers various educational and production activities during the vacation. Cutting-edge equipment utilization training such as 3D printer and laser cutter, training of Arduino prototype production, and craft / woodworking training are held every day. Through 3D machine experience and understanding of 3D printers through cutting-edge virtual machine (VR) equipment, software experience, and 3D pen experience such as UNIMAT, the 'Universe of dream machine' experience, students can get various education such as experience making things in three dimensions for free even during vacation. In the establishment room of the Smart Factory on the second floor of the Engineering Building, various student entrepreneurship clubs are focusing on new business start-up strategies during vacation. Smart Factory, a Maker Space for Konkuk University students who make ideas and help them to start their own businesses, has a total area of more than 1,250 square meters, including a VR room, a metal equipment room, a woodworking room, a 3D printer room, a design room, students can come and create prototypes freely. It is also a facility to help people to start their business based on ideas. Students can visit anytime with an idea and have a simple training and then create a prototype directly.
■ "Attempts to nourish students as global leader with problem-solving ability"
In a recent New Year’s greeting, the KU President Sanggi Min said, "The expansion of facilities such as the Smart Factory and K-Cube, which provide students with the dream of starting a business, has been extended to the entire campus. It is our hope that our students will be able to meet the needs of global students with problem solving abilities, critical thinking, creativity, "I am going to go beyond the limits of Korean university education with the aim of "convergence" and "integration".
And the President also said "we will continue to innovate in order to create an educational environment, suitable for cultivating talented students in the future with the new framework of industry-academia cooperation achieved through the Prime Project." And added "we will also construct K-Cube centered on humanities, the second Smart Factory, AR-VR-related training center and a training room for entrepreneurship education."
