Dr. Youngjae, Jeon, was inaugurated as the 21st President of Konkuk University on September 1st. In order to prevent the spared of COVID-19, Konkuk University held a brief inauguration ceremony instead of an official one in the conference room of Administration Building earlier on the same day. While the ceremony is attended by Jaeun, Yoo, the Chairman of Board of Trustees, employees, Vice President, Dean of Academic Affairs, and faculty members, the event served the first Academic Affairs Committee of Fall 2020 at the same time.
In his inaugural address, President Jeon announced, “We will inherit the spirit of challenge and dedication from Dr. Sanghuh, the founder of Konkuk, and find our own path of ‘Create Konkuk’ to create new Konkuk based on the philosophy of communication and coexistence,” adding, “We will make our best efforts to turn Konkuk University into the most prestigious school that drives the competitiveness of Korea.”President Jeon suggested fostering creativity as the primary principle of education. “Creative convergence education centered on the ability to experience and integrate diversity is highly required to cultivate creative talent for future society,” President Jeon emphasized, “We will improve the education system and build innovative infrastructure to produce creative talent who can express novelty without being restricted by existing framework.”‘Coexistence Management’ through communication and harmony is another operating principle suggested by President Jeon. “We will choose ways to coexist through discussions when making policies or decisions based on the trust and mutual respect of other members.” He added, “We will make sure to establish coexisting communication system where our university and faculty, faculty and students, and students and university can communicate with each other and be satisfied.”
President Jeon presented a blueprint for college education through industry academia collaboration clusters, saying that “We will fulfill global cooperation as well as industry academia education in areas of climate change, renewable energy, low-carbon transportation, and environmental pollution, focusing on the concept of ‘Green New Deal’ which includes the meaning of ecology, environment and life.” He continually stated, “It is necessary for us to work on the concept of ‘Beyond the University’ in the upcoming post-COVID era.” and promised, “We will develop Konkuk University into a ‘global cyber university’ building global network and training talents at home and abroad through cyber education research platform.”Proposing a slogan of ‘A history of leadership', President Jeon delivered his message of elevating Konkuk University to one of the world’s top 100 universities and placing Konkuk in the ranks of the world’s leading prestigious private schools.President Jeon has received bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degree from chemistry department of Konkuk University. Later on, he served as a leader of LCD research team at Samsung SDI Research Institute and a senior researcher of Display Laboratory at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Then, he continued his profession as professor, Director of Office of External Affairs and Dean of Graduate School of Engineering at Konkuk University. As an authority on LCD research, he has published 76 theses in international journals of SCI level and won the grand prize for 2019 Commercializing New Technologies in Korea with his outstanding achievements.President Jeon was the one who first commercialized PDLCD(Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Display), which was selected as World Class Product of Korea by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. In recognition of his contribution, he was chosen as ‘TOP 100 SCIENTIST’ of Cambridge IBC(International Biographical Center), one of the world’s top three biographical dictionaries. He is also a professor of entrepreneurship who founded and managed a business venture of POLCD.
