‘Biophilia’, student volunteer club of College of Veterinary Science of Konkuk University, went to Vientiane city of Laos for overseas volunteer service to contribute to improvement of public health from 10th to 20th.
The 5th overseas volunteer work in Laos was attended by more than 20 students from Konkuk University's biophilia (Chairman Eun-Ji Heo, professor Hun-young Yoon), special professor Yong-seung Park, and alumni veterinarian from Konkuk University. Vaccinations and medical treatments were carried out and quarantine protection was carried out. The Konkuk University Veterinary Volunteer Corps inoculated swine Reproductive Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRS) vaccine and prevented rabies virus from over 500 domestic animals and pets such as dogs, cats, cattle, goats, pigs, chickens and ducks in the Unian village and Senudom village in Vientiane city, Laos. Inoculations, comprehensive vaccines, and insect repellents were carried out.The 5th Laos volunteer work was supported by the various institutions such as Animal Hospital of Konkuk University, Green Cross Veterinary Products, Bayer Korea, Boehringer Ingelheim, BKpharm, Seoul Veterinary Society, Zoetis, Choong Ang Vaccine, Nowon N Animal Hospital, Baek-nyun Animal Hospital, Seocho I-eum Animal Hospital, Songpa Huimang Animal Hospital, Amazon Animal Hospital, Eo-jeong Animal Hospital, Yongin Hanmaeum Animal Hospital, VIP Animal Medical Center Sungshin Women's University Branch, VIP Animal Medical Center Changan Branch, 24h Jamsil On Animal Hospital, Yooseok Animal Hospital, and Professors and Alumni’s of College of Veterinary Science with their donation and medical supplies. In particular, the 5th volunteer work, in accordance with the signing of the MOU with the College of Veterinary Medicine of Laos National University, also academic and cultural exchanges and joint volunteer activities between Biophilia and Laos National University were conducted.
Laos suffers from the death of industrial animals every three years due to a lack of veterinary specialists, and Lao residents are exposed to common infectious diseases such as rabies, but they do not have adequate medical services. Biophilia, which started out of a difficult situation for people and animals, started in 2016 with Laos veterinary services, inoculating over 2,000 animals and contributing to improving public health abroad. Biophilia was created in March 2015 by a group of veterinary students with a will to realize the spirit of service based on the philosophy of respect for life. Veterinary volunteer work are currently done under the guidance of veterinarians who are active both at home and abroad. In addition, they are volunteering on a regular basis every month in association with various veterinary social groups. The Chairman of Biophilia Eun-ji Heo(College of Veterinary Medicine) said, “This year, as Laos National University and Konkuk University’s College of Veterinary Medicine signed a business agreement, we also engaged in voluntary veterinary exchange activities such as joint veterinary service and cultural exchange. It was more meaningful than ever to fill in the vulnerable areas of each other. I am so grateful to the veterinarians and alumni who trust us and help us every year, as well as to the companies that support us.
