A result of an operation research on the campaign "I'M DOgNOR: the visiting dog blood donation car" jointly conducted by Hyundai Motor Company and Konkuk University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with Korean Canine Blood Donor Association were recently published at the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society(IVECCS) symposium, drawing attention from scholars around the world.International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society(IVECCS) symposium is one of the largest international veterinary associations with more than 20,000 participants each year. This year's symposium which was scheduled in St. Louis was held online from September 12 to 14 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Following the previous year, the Department of Emergency Critical Care Medicine at Konkuk University's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital made the presentation with the adoption of its research abstract in IVECCS. Especially, it received much attention for the announcement of ‘the visiting dog blood donation car’ this year. The contents of the presentation included production process of the visiting dog blood donation car, selecting process of campaign participating dogs, blood donation process, campaign results, etc. Researchers at Konkuk University's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital stated that about half of the applying dogs were not elected as final blood donors due to vector-borne disease, which is a medium of mosquitos, flies, and mites. The average age and weight of the applying dogs were 3.58 years old and 34kg. They analyzed that the blood donation campaign was effective in recruiting more participants by improving access to blood donation centers and increasing efficiency of donation programs.Konkuk University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital held a two-month blood donation campaign from October to December, 2019 with a blood donation car, Solati, renovated by Hyundai Motor Company, which toured 13 regions across the country, and supported four to six medical staff including veterinarians and two veterinary college students. The blood donation car has a blood collection and analysis room with the latest medical equipment, and the dogs participating in the campaign got medical checkups and supplies. The blood obtained from the campaign was donated to Konkuk University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital as well as front-line animal hospitals.Professor Hyunjung Han said, “The campaign ‘the visiting dog blood donation car’ was the first attempted system not only in Korea but in Asia, and allowed Konkuk University to be recognized in the field of veterinary science and elevate its reputation,” adding that “We will make efforts to ensure that the campaign is also acknowledged academically by publishing related contents in a thesis.”
