A student team of Konkuk University’s Graduate School of Architecture and Department of Architecture (Professor Jeonggon Kim) participated in ‘Seoul Urban Art Museum, Seoul is Mesuem’, a college cooperative public art project, and displayed their works with the theme of urban restoration at the main gate of Seoul Children’s Grand Park situated in Neungdong-ro, Grwanjin-gu. Seoul.The team consisting of students from Graduate School of Architecture, Peter Um, Hyunsong Kang, Jihyun Moon, Kyungjun Lee and Minkyuk Han, has been selected for the business of Seoul City, ‘2020 Seoul Urban Art Project, Seoul is Meseum’, and promoted a site-specific public art project with universities, local institutions, students, and residents.Since mid-September, the displayed work ‘Interest (a combined term of ’Interaction’ and ‘Rest’) near the outdoor deck at the main gate of Seoul Children’s Grand Park aimed to experience and deliver the message of Recovery of Placeness, Social Interaction, and Connection with Neighborhoods in a new way for visitors and local residents. The artwork which has transparent plastic balls in the rectangular wire mesh structure presents different mood during the day and night while serving its role as a resting area for people to relax or chat on it like a bench.Peter Um, the leader of the team said, “The outdoor deck located on the left side of the main gate of Seoul Children’s Grand Park has been left empty except the six benches on the surrounding despite its useful location as an intersection,” adding that “We tried to share the value of the neglected space for residents and visitors by arousing their interest with relaxing programs during the day and lighting at night.”‘2020 Seoul Urban Art Project, Seoul is Meseum’ held by Seoul City is a site-specific public art project with the participation of universities in Seoul working on public art. The purpose of this project is to invigorate the region by the participation of students and residents in art activities with the theme of ‘urban restoration’. Seoul City has selected six teams in participation from last April to May targeting the Graduate School of Art, Design, and Architecture in Seoul. The judging criteria of the contest includes originality, public art resources, resource application, and practicality, and up to 20 million won was paid to the selected work for each team.
