Konkuk University’s Research Center of the Humanities for Unification(Director Sungmin Kim, Department of Philosophy) announced on the 19th that the center has first developed Inter-Korean Antagonism Index(IKAI). IKAI is the result of a three-year study by the team of Research Center of the Humanities for Unification (Research Director, Professor Jonggon Kim) under the theme of ‘Development of Inter-Korean Antagonism Index and Policy Research with Big Data’ selected by Nation Reserach Foundation of Korea’s General Joint Research Program.
The antagonism between South and North Korea has been addressed abstractly, but has never been empirically studied based on objective data until now. However, IKAI quantifies the hostile feelings of South Koreans toward North Korea based on its original analytical method and shows the changing intensity. The index demonstrates what specific emotions(anxiety, fear, disgust, etc.) comprise antagonism as well as the correlation of the emotions. With the development of IKAI, it became possible to analyze internal and external factors affecting the antagonism, deepen the research, and prepare policies in various fields to ease the hostility.
IKAI has significance as it works based on the big data analysis method and is the research result of the convergence of ‘humanities’, ‘society’, and ‘technology’. Moreover, it discusses the antagonism, which has been an obstacle to continuous and effective communication of South and North Korea, in terms of collective emotion, and is receiving special attention from academia as it quantitatively measures the antagonism.
The research team of Research Center of the Humanities for Unification will continue to observe and analyze the antagonism based on the index and present it to major medias in the future. In this regard, the team is currently discussing the data with the leading newspapers and planning to suggest the policies for each field to government administrative departments to alleviate the antagonism based on the accumulated data.
Director Kim of Research Center of the Humanities for Unification said, “The development of IKAI is a valuable asset of integrated research capabilities of Research Center of the Humanities for Unification,” adding that “The ten year of on campus research is a great achievement that shows the value of convergence research on unification.”
The research director, Professor Jonggon Kim, said, “We sincerely thank the Ministry of Education, the research team, and Konkuk University for supporting the research. We also appreciate the participating professors and researchers who worked so hard for the last three years, and will further improve the resesarch capability of Konkuk University.”
