Korean researchers led by Konkuk University professors recently identified the cause of neuroinflammation, which is common in degenerative brain diseases like Parkinson’s disease. They identified the proteins that play a key role in the neuroinflammation process, and their research promises to lead to a cure for brain diseases by controlling these proteins.
The research was led by the professors of Konkuk University—Prof. Lee Seung-jae of the Department of Biomedical Science and Technology of the Graduate School and Prof. Lee He-jin of the Department of Anatomy of the School of Medicine. The study was also conducted by Prof. Hwang Dae-hee of the School of Interdisciplinary Bioscience and Bioengineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering at POSTECH, Korea, and Prof. Eliezer Masliah of the Department of Neurosciences and Pathology of the School of Medicine at the University of California, USA.
Their paper “Neuron-released oligomeric α-synuclein is an endogenous agonist of TLR2 for paracrine activation of microglia” was published in the March 6 issue of Nature Communications.
