On 28 May 2013, a delegation from the state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany visited Konkuk. A 50-strong delegation composed of representatives from the state government, and those from the universities and companies in the state met with President Song Hee-young of Konkuk and toured the Konkuk University Fraunhofer ISE Next Generation Solar Cell Research Center (KFnSC).
The delegates and President Song discussed ways to expand collaboration in research on the development of renewable energy sources including solar cells, and agreed to build on the success of KFnSC.
In May 2009, with financial support from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Konkuk opened KFnSC, as a joint research center on solar cell research with Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), the worldwide leader in this area. Baden-Württemberg is home to Fraunhofer ISE. KFnSC is the first joint research center the ISE has established in Asia and the second one in the world after its collaboration with MIT in the U.S.
The delegates included Mr. Winfried Kretschmann, a member of the Green Party of Germany and Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, Ms. Theresia Bauer, State Minister of Science, Research and Art of Baden-Württemberg, Prof. Dr. Bernd Engler, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tübingen, Dr. Eicke R. Weber, Director of Fraunhofer ISE, and representatives of the companies operating in the state.
Baden-Württemberg is the third largest of the country’s sixteen states in terms of both area and population.
