Konkuk University (KU) announced on Feb. 11, 2014, that In-Ki Jang (Senior; International Trade Major, College of Commerce and Economics, KU) and Jiung Kim (Senior; Dept. of Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering, KU) were awarded the Korean Education Minister's Award and KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) President's Award, respectively.
As team members of the PAS Youth Corps organized by The Pacific Asia Society (PAS) and sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Education, Jang visited the Universitas Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia and Kim visited the Mongolian University of Science and Technology to provide educational and cultural services, for three weeks in the summer of 2012.
Both students introduced Korean culture such as Hangul, Taekwondo, and Samulnori (i.e., Korean percussion music genre) to the local students, carried out activities for environmental protection, and held musical performances at the local nursing home of their respective volunteer sites.
Jang's devotion and spirit of service were highly recognized that he became a recipient of the Korean Education Minister's award in Dec. 2013. "I believe I have received this award on behalf of many youth who are serving wholeheartedly in various areas," said Jang. "I hope more students can enjoy the opportunity of feeling a sense of achievement and brightening up our society through volunteer work."
Kim, who received the KOICA President's Award, said, "The three weeks I spent in Mongolia was not just about service but a time I learned how to share my heart." He added, "I would like to strongly recommend my friends to actively take part in volunteer activities."
