Konkuk University Medical Center (KUMC) in Seoul, Korea, announced on Dec. 20, 2013, that two Iraqi children with congenital heart disease were invited for free surgery and treatment. This is a part of the Korea Iraq Friendship Foundation's project which invites children in Iraq who have long been exposed to the civil war and terrorism. KUMC is to fully support all treatment-related expenses including hospital admission, medical examinations, and surgeries, while the Foundation is to cover living and travel expenses. Alzaer Noor Ali Gheni, age 10, who arrived on Dec. 18, 2013, will be the first person to receive surgery. The other recipient will be arriving in Korea in Jan. 2014.
Noor Ali Gheni was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), a congenital heart disease. Upon discovering cyanoderma which exhibits a bluish discoloration of lips and nails, she went to the hospital but could not find any medical professionals who could perform applicable surgery. After searching arduously for a solution, Noor Ali Gheni encountered the Al-Hakim Foundation headed by Ammar al-Hakim, President of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, through which she was connected to the Korea Iraq Friendship Foundation and ultimately to the opportunity to receive free surgery at KUMC.
On Dec. 19, KUMC Director Dr. Jung-Hyun Yang, former Vice President of Iraq and Honorary Chairman of the Board Adil Abdul-Mahdi, Korea Iraq Friendship Foundation's Chairman of the Board Mr. Byung Do Han, and other guests visited Noor Ali Gheni to deliver words of encouragement.
The medical team in charge of the surgery includes Dr. Dong-Man Seo (KUMC Cardiovascular Center), a prestigious surgeon of pediatric cardiac surgery who has given new hearts to more than 5,000 patients so far. KUMC had provided free surgeries to pediatric cardiac patients from various nations, such as Egypt, the Philippines, and Vietnam, in Oct. and Nov. 2012.
