The opening ceremony of the Konkuk University Institute for International Development Cooperation (KUIIDC) was held on Feb. 17, 2014. The objective of the Institute, headed by Prof. Sang-Gi Min, is to actively participate in international development cooperation affairs that pursue the sharing of successful development experiences such as the Saemaul Undong (also known as the "New Village Movement"), democratization, and national economic development policy with developing nations, as well as the common prosperity for all.
In particular, KUIIDC was founded to take part in Korea's official development assistance (ODA) so as to contribute to the development and enhancement of developing countries and the Korean model of international development cooperation,
KU Professors were appointed to oversee important parts of the Institute: Prof. Chang Seon Song (Dept. of Veterinary Medicine) will serve as Chief of the ODA Center, Prof. Hong-Gu Lee (Dept. of Animal Science and Technology) as Chief of the New Village Project, Prof. Se Won Park (Dept. Bioresources and Food Science) as Chief of the Global Strategy Center, Prof. Daehwan Kim (Dept. of Economics) as Chief of the Central Asia Institute, and Prof. Haejin Yoon (KU Graduate School) as Director-General.
Following the opening ceremony, a two-day workshop was held at the Toji Foundation of Culture in Wonju-si, Gangwon Province, during which presentations and discussions on the globalization of the Saemaul Undong and cooperation measures for Central Asia took place.
The KUIIDC signboard was created by Mr. Jeong-gyun Shin, an eminent Korean calligrapher.
