On Nov. 6, 2013, Dr. Lawrence B. Schook, Vice President for Research and Edward William and Jane Marr Gutgsell Professor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) visited Konkuk University (KU) to give a special lecture on 'The Pig Genome Project: Implications for Human Health.'
As the first topic, Dr. Schook introduced the 'Animal Models for Complex Traits and Diseases,' and in particular, the new pig models for cancer studies and related research. The second topic was on the significance of the international swine genome sequencing project and the utilization of its outcomes, for which he discussed the results relevant to the studies on disease mechanisms based on the similarities between pigs' quantitative trait loci genes and illness-related human genes. As the last theme, Dr. Schook presented on the pig epigenomics research, which is being carried out as a joint study with KU's Prof. Chankyu Park (Dept. of Animal Biotechnology, College of Animal Bioscience and Technology).
This special lecture was sponsored by the BK21 PLUS Project Team at the KU Dept. of Animal Science and Technology. Dr. Schook paid a courtesy visit to KU President Heeyoung Song and discussed academic exchange and cooperation between KU and the UIUC.
