Department of Bio-Healing Convergence at Konkuk University Graduate School announced on the 29th that campus entrance of ‘therapy dog’ and therapists assisting counselees with emotional support and therapy motivation is allowed.Therapy dogs are educated and certified through several stages of competence test, training and socialization training for Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT). One of the most actively working therapy animals is ‘dog’ around the globe, which consists of 80% of the total therapy animals following cats, rabbits and horses.It is required to use dog leash within 2m during the walk in campus and attach ‘KU Animal-Assisted Therapy’ lead that can be recognized from a distance. The department agreed on taking walks around Lake Ilgam and College of Veterinary Medicine while keeping social distance from pedestrians, carefully considering students on campus and seeking methods of coexisting between therapy animals and students.Professor Jin Soo Han from Department of Bio-Healing Convergence, specializing in Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), said, “Therapy animals play a significant role in improving a counselee’s problem by motivating treatment and emotionally supporting the counselee to build positive relationships.”Department of Bio-Healing Convergence and Gwangjin-gu Office are also holding ‘Pet School’ supported by Seoul City. This program is hosted by 3R Animal Welfare Research Institute and Campus Town Project Group and supported by Konkuk Dairy & Ham and Pet & Nutrition while professionals from various backgrounds including veterinarians, animal welfare experts, pet behavior experts, pet aromatherapists and animal-mediated psychological counselor participate in.
