Konkuk University (KU) and the Seoul Metropolitan Government concluded a business agreement for the operation of the "Citizen College" through which Seoul citizens can take humanities courses, primarily, at a university in their neighborhood.
At the signing ceremony held on July 21, 2014, KU and the Seoul government agreed to mutually cooperate for the operation of the "Citizen College," which utilizes the superb educational infrastructure of existing universities to engender an environment for lifelong learning for everyone. The Seoul government will be in charge of overall management of the college and support of lecturers' salaries, while KU will be responsible for developing educational curricula with a focus on unification studies, recruiting a group of lecturers, and providing classrooms, educational materials, and equipment. Recruitment of students and promotional activities will be jointly conducted by the two sides.
As the hub of community lifelong learning, "Citizen College" is a degree awarding institution that is compatible with the change of paradigm brought by the era of increased life expectancy. The Seoul government is promoting this project to discover specialized areas in each university and to encourage continuing education through the operation of an adult-friendly college.
