Director Rao commented that the World Heritage Convention has been playing a critical role in conserving the world's great cultural and natural heritage for the past 40 years. He added that from now on, international efforts should be focused on protecting World Heritage in the LDCs.
He also expressed his appreciation for Korea's activities that support the conservation of World Heritage, mentioning that Korea has been continuously advocating the sustainable development of nations where World Heritage is located, such as North Korea, the Philippines, Maldives, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
The World Heritage Centre was founded in 1992 within the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a coordinating and central body in charge of matters concerning World Heritage.
