Konkuk University (KU) established the KU Startup Support Group following its selection as a "Startup-Leading University" by the Korean government in early 2014. On April 29, 2014, a ceremony for the official launch of the KU Startup Support Group was held at the Admissions & Information Technology Building. The event was attended by President Heeyoung Song of KU, President Si-woo Kang of Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development (KISED), Administrator Hyung-ho Kim of the Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA), Director Cheol Gyu Lee of the KU Venture Business Support Center, and distinguished guests.
The KU Venture Business Support Center, which began its operation in 1999, plans to promote its capacity for leading startup businesses, by providing tailored curricula focusing on information technology (IT), biotechnology (BT), and cultural technology (CT). The Center will also pursue systematized startup education, enhancement of startup success rate, startup contests, and various programs necessary for settling a favorable atmosphere for starting startups. In the past three years, the Center has fostered 76 entrepreneurs through its joint venture support project conducted with KU Dept. of Advanced Industry Fusion.
Among junior startup founders whose businesses achieve success by 2017, KU plans to foster 10 startup stars. Such endeavor is expected to become a firm benchmark for future entrepreneurs with a long-term plan for their venture businesses.
The KU Startup Support Group is holding Forum Mentors, a special lecture series where successful experts and entrepreneurs share their success stories and know-hows, free of charge, on a monthly basis. Forum Mentors is a form of talent donation which delivers the message of the startup spirit as well as providing the mentors' life lessons to students and the general public who are interested in startups.
Around 1,000 people participated in the past two occasions of Forum Mentors which took place in April and May 2014. The mentors of past forums include Mr. Seok Chul Kwon, CEO of CUVEPIA Inc., an information security software company, Reverend Hae-sung Kim, Director of Global Village of Love-Sharing, Korea's largest organization devoted to supporting immigrants residing in Korea, and several other speakers pioneering different areas of society.
Taking into account the increasing interest and participation in the event, Forum Mentors will be offered on a regular basis on the last Tuesday of each month. The third Forum Mentors was held on June 24, 2014. The KU Startup Support Group plans to invite not only startup entrepreneurs but also eminent persons in other areas of expertise to offer the participants a wide range of knowledge and wisdom.
