In January 2015, Konkuk University Institute for International Development Cooperation (KUIIDC) and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have launched a rural community development project for Nepal and a capacity building training program for enhancing the value of agricultural products of developing countries.
The project for Nepal concerns five districts, aiming to increase the local residents' income and enhance autonomous local development capacity, to ultimately achieve a higher quality of life. The project duration is from January 2015 to June 2020, and the KOICA contract was jointly won by KUIIDC and Korea Engineering Consultants Corporation, an affiliated company of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction. Konkuk's faculty members will be taking part to disseminate Korea's Saemaul Undong (also known as the "New Community Movement" or "New Village Movement") as well as to support agricultural development in relation to their respective fields (e.g., health, medical care, animal science, etc.).
The agricultural product value enhancement project is an education official development assistance (ODA) program which cultivates core talent, the driving force of agricultural technology development in developing countries. This project will be conducted from August to December 2015, a total of three semesters, with the participation of 13 Konkuk professors including Prof. Doo-Hwan Kim (KU Dept. of Bioresources & Food Science) and invited lecturers. Trainees will consist of government officials from central governments, central civil service training institutions, policy research institutions, and local administrative agencies of developing countries. The participating officials will receive training for three semesters, complete an internship over the summer and winter vacations, and go through thesis examination following the internship.
