Konkuk University's (KU) Campus Energy Saver (CES) team composed of 19 students in the departments of environmental engineering and electrical engineering were awarded a commendation from the Seoul Association for Green Campus Initiative, a non-profit organization represented by Seoul Mayor Won-soon Park and 34 presidents of universities located in Seoul. This award was given by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, in recognition of the CES team's efforts to reduce energy consumption on campus by carrying out various energy conservation programs.
The CES team, funded with 23.5 million KRW (approx. 22,000 USD) through an agreement with the Seoul Metropolitan Government as part of its project for supporting energy conservation practices, has been implementing diverse projects since March 2014, aiming to cut the campus' electricity consumption and eventually reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The events and projects carried out by the team includes installing an experimental energy-saving restroom, blocking standby power in computer labs, making solar-powered fan heaters, and attaching energy conservation signs in campus buildings. The team's efforts were a huge success - approximately150 million KRW (or about 140,000 USD) was reduced in energy cost by saving 1,424,528kWh of electricity and reducing 631 tons of GHGs as a result.
