On Nov. 18, 2014, Konkuk University (KU) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the New Engineering Building to be erected near the Engineering Building on KU Seoul Campus in Neungdong-ro, Gwangjin-gu. The construction of this 12-storey, 2-level basement building with a total floor area of about 25,196㎡ will be completed in July 2016.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by about 100 Konkuk members including Chairperson Kyung-hee Kim and President Heeyoung Song, as well as distinguished guests.
The New Engineering Building will be built in the shape of the Korean alphabet (hangul) "ㄱ" between KU:L House (on-campus student dormitory) and the College of Engineering. Its features include highly efficient energy facilities built according to environment-friendly, green energy standards as well as a laboratory-centered design intended for an optimal research environment. All 12 levels will be utilized as research laboratories, undergraduate collaborative research laboratories, lecture halls, seminar rooms, and various convenience facilities. The building will be green-certified at the highest level, rated 1 for energy efficiency, utilizing 100% LED lighting, and adopting new and renewable energy equipment with the application of cutting-edge technology and design. It is expected to become the standard of university facility which provides an eco-friendly and comfortable environment.
