Ms. Lisa Jackson and Ms. Sita Makris, interns at the International Programs Team, Office of International Affairs at Konkuk University (KU), who are also visiting students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (US), completed their internship on June 15, 2015. On this day, they were awarded completion certificates by Dr. Kwangsoo Kim, Vice President of International Affairs.
Ms. Jackson worked as an intern for two semesters, Fall 2014 and Spring 2015, while Ms. Makris joined in Spring 2015. In the spring semester, they each conducted English For You (E4U) classes from April to early June. Another part of their internship involved gathering and organizing content for Konkuk's English website (www.konkuk.ac.kr/eng). Moreover, they planned and organized the KU Model Photoshoot Event held on June 5, participating in modeling as well. The photos will be mainly utilized for the "KU Jacket" page to be created on the English website.
"This past year has been a really memorable experience for me. I originally applied for the internship for the opportunity to edit the English website and work in an office setting which I haven't really been able to experience through my chemistry major. In addition, through this internship I've learned a lot about Korean language and culture, and also gained many friends. I would encourage everyone to apply for this internship as it is a great chance to engage in a wide variety of activities from public relations and peer-teaching interactions to modeling," said Ms. Jackson, reflecting on her internship experience.
Ms. Makris shared her thoughts on the internship as well. "I think this internship has definitely helped me learn more about the public relations field and taught me many skills that can help me in the future if I continue this career path. I was able to gain some knowledge about designing a webpage and how to put together content so it can be easily accessible and comprehensible for the audience. Also, through teaching the English classes, I was able to improve my leadership and speaking skills," she said.
Director Jongkook Kong of the International Programs Team expressed his sincere appreciation the interns' hard work. "Our interns worked very diligently throughout the semester, and we have been privileged to have them. We hope our interns will fully utilize what they have learned through this hands-on internship for their future career," he said.
Ms. Eun Jin Cho, internship program supervisor and KU English Editor, commented, "We are glad that Lisa and Sita could hone many skills while carrying out public relations activities and teaching English to Korean students. Also, as Sita will be continuing her internship in Fall 2015, I am thrilled to continue to work with her and look forward to welcoming a new intern to work closely with Sita."
The International Programs Team at KU has been offering an internship program for international visiting students to Konkuk via International Studies Abroad (ISA) to provide practical work experience during their stay in Korea. Applications will be accepted through ISA Seoul and video interviews will be conducted with selected applicants during the summer vacation.
