On Oct. 21, 2015, Konkuk University (KU) conferred upon His Excellency the President, Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama, President of the Republic of Botswana, an Honorary Doctorate in Political Science during His Excellency’s visit to Korea as guest of the state for the Korea-Botswana bilateral talks. President Khama received this honorary doctoral degree in recognition of his contributions to the political and economic development of Africa and to the enhanced cooperative relations between Korea and Botswana.
The Republic of Botswana is a model country in southern Africa which has achieved steady economic growth in the previous years. Since August of this year, Botswana has been making contributions toward regional peace and stability as chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which has led to an important partnership with Korea in regards to entering the African market. President Khama is particularly assessed as a leader who has led the political and socioeconomic development of Botswana and his country is recognized as the model case by not only African countries but developing countries worldwide, continuing the legacy of the late Sir Seretse Khama, the first president of Botswana.
Upon conferring the honorary doctorate, KU President Heeyoung Song emphasized that, “His Excellency President Seretse Khama Ian Khama has been leading the sustained economic and national development of the Republic of Botswana through his strong leadership based on stable governance.” He added that this is a meaningful occasion for Konkuk as the University’s expansion of international development cooperation and official development assistance (ODA) are underway.
The conferment ceremony was attended by numerous distinguished guests including KU Chairperson Kyung-hee Kim, KU President Heeyoung Song, His Excellency Mr. Yeon Ho Choi, Ambassador to Botswana (with residence in Pretoria), Chairman Jaetaek Yang of the Korea-Africa Exchange Association, the Botswana delegation, and numerous members of the KU academic board and staff.Since 2014, KU has been carrying out international development cooperation projects through which Korea’s successful development experiences – such as the Saemaul Undong, development of agricultural and livestock stockbreeding, and economic development policies – are shared with developing nations in African and Central Asian countries. This year, Konkuk has invited government officials from 13 developing countries, who are affiliated with ministries concerning the agro-livestock area, for the newly launched KOICA-KU Master’s Program in Degree Program in Agricultural Processing and Marketing.
