President Heeyoung Song of Konkuk University (KU) gave a presentation titled “The Success of KU’s Global Initiatives and Application” during the University Competitiveness Network President Summit held at Konyang University’s medical campus in Daejeon on November 19, 2015. “In addition to focusing on education, global initiatives by Korean universities need to become research- and service-oriented,” said Dr. Song.
During the first stage of its global initiatives, KU focused on nurturing global talent through education. The second stage aimed at producing global knowledge through research, while the third stage focuses on providing service to the global community. As a successful example during the second stage, Dr. Song cited the establishment of KU’s Flexible Display R2R Research Center and its collaboration with Germany’s TU Chemnitz and Fraunhofer Institute as well as Finland’s Valtion Teknillinen Tutkimuskeskus. Furthermore, as part of the third stage, KU received 5 billion won in financing from the Korea International Cooperation Agency that will allow KU’s Institute for International Development Cooperation to support the Biotechnology Center at Palestine Polytechnic University during 2013-2017. According to Dr. Song, KU is particularly well-positioned to assist developing countries given its strengths in agriculture; KU is the only university to have four colleges dedicated to agriculture and biology in Korea.
In his presentation, Dr. Song emphasized that the government’s financial support is critical to the success of global initiatives and strategies by Korean universities. “The government should recognize the importance of technologies possessed by Korean universities and provide financial support for effective industry-university collaboration worldwide,” he said. “This will in turn strengthen the research capacity of Korean universities.”
