The award ceremony for Konkuk University (KU) students who received the 2015 Hoban Foundation Scholarship was held on October 28, 2015. Since its establishment in 1999, Hoban Foundation has provided 10 billion won in scholarships to approximately 6,200 students who demonstrated high academic achievement or need for financial assistance. In 2015, 196 KU students were selected for scholarships totaling 300 million won, bringing the number of total recipients to 322.
Thirty students with exceptional academic performance for three semesters received scholarships two years in a row. Scholarships were also given to 72 students who encountered financial difficulties. In particular, 67 million won was given to 59 seniors at the special request of Hoban Construction and Foundation Chairman Sang-yeol Kim in order to reduce unemployment among young people. “Young Koreans suffer from uncertainties of the future and face the challenge of securing jobs,” said Chairman Kim. “However, a crisis can become an opportunity if you change your perspective.”
On behalf of the scholarship recipients, Mr. Younghoon Chang, a junior studying chemistry, said he will form a “KU Hoban Community” to network with fellow recipients and take on responsibilities in the community according to the mission and legacy of KU and Hoban Construction. KU President Song Heeyoung also relayed thanks from the scholarship recipients and their families, and said he hopes students can “learn from Chairman Kim not only regarding management skills, but also contributions to the society.”
