In October 2015, Konkuk University (KU) President Song Heeyoung announced that the total installed solar capacity has reached 700 kW, enough to provide electricity to 1,087 households. KU first introduced a solar system in 2005—a 50 kW installation at KU’s Sports Center in Icheon. This was soon followed by another 50 kW solar system installed atop the Life & Environmental Science Building at the Seoul campus.
In addition to generating electricity for its own use, KU also participates in the government’s “Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS)” project, which mandates utility companies to supply a certain minimum share of electricity from renewable sources. In September 2013, the 100kW solar installation atop of Sanghuh Memorial Library became the first installation among universities in Seoul built for the project. The array includes 396 solar panels covering 2,700 m2 and generates an annual profit of approximately 50 million won by selling electricity to Kepco. Another 100kW solar system was installed on top of the Sanghuh Research Building for the RPS project the following year. In 2015, three additional buildings installed solar panels bringing KU’s total solar capacity to 700 kW.
With the new solar system installation, KU expects to raise 260 million won annually, which will be used for adding and improving facilities. “We have plans for a 500 kW solar system atop the New Engineering Building,” said Mr. Byeongwoo Lee of KU’s Office of Facilities. “The goal is to ultimately have environmentally friendly energy systems producing 1,600 kW.”
