Twenty one members of Biophilia will visit Laos during January 19-26, 2016, to vaccinate and treat small animals as well as farm animals. Biophilia is a Konkuk University (KU) volunteer group composed of College of Veterinary Medicine students, professors, and alumni. Founded in March 2015, it held a total of nine volunteer events, including visits to animal shelters in partnership with local veterinary medical associations in order to treat ear and skin diseases, perform sterilization surgeries, and administer vaccinations.
For the trip to Laos, the College of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Hospital of KU, Korean University Council for Social Service, Seoul Veterinary Medical Association, ChoongAng Vaccine Lab, Vetoquinol Korea, Bayer Korea, and other pharmaceutical companies have donated vaccines and medical equipment. “Because medical treatment towards animals is still a foreign concept in Laos, farm animals die in large numbers every three years,” said KU student Mr. Jaehwan Jung in choosing the country as Biophilia’s first foreign destination for volunteer activities. “We plan to focus on preventing contagious diseases as well as managing the health of swine effectively through PCVs and parasiticides,” he added.
