Konkuk University (KU) announced that it had established a scholarship for ethnic Korean students in Kazakhstan at the request of the Korean diaspora communities in the country and Central Asia. With recommendations from a Korean association and the Korea Education Center in Almaty, Ms. Ilya Kim, became the first scholarship recipient. The scholarship covers Ms. Kim’s first year at the Konkuk Language Institute and four years of undergraduate studies as well as dormitory fees. In addition, she will receive a monthly stipend of \500,000, which became possible by Hoban Construction Chairman Sangyeol Kim’s donation. Once Ms. Kim acquires language proficiency, she is expected to start her undergraduate studies in the fall semester of 2016 or the following semester. On March 11, 2016, an award ceremony was held with KU President Heeyoung Song. At the ceremony, Ms. Kim expressed her interest in studying management after completing language courses. President Song said KU will support Ms. Kim so that she may become a global leader who will contribute to Korea-Kazakhstan relations. “It is meaningful that Konkuk University, which was founded to raise leaders of the nation, can help ethnic Koreans overcome their tragic history,” he said.
