To encourage students to visit the library more often and create an academic environment, the Sanghuh Memorial Library held a ceremony on November 26, 2015, to award nine students who borrowed the most books during the academic year. Mr. Sanghoo Song, a master’s student in environmental engineering, borrowed 162 books, the highest number among all Konkuk University students. For undergraduate students, Mr. Jongil Jeon, who is enrolled in the Department of Japanese Language Education, borrowed the most at 135 books. Mr. Youngjin Baek, a doctorate candidate in information technology and management who is also a vice president at Doosan Heavy Industries, also stood out for borrowing 114 books. In addition, three students—Mr. Doohyun Hwang (’09, Mechanical Engineering), Ms. Sorae Kim (’11, Political Science and Diplomacy), and Mr. Jaesung Kim (’08 Law)—were awarded as “excellent users” of the library.
Following are excerpts from an interview with Mr. Song.Q. What is the secret to reading many books?
A. I read books that are interesting to me. Once I read an interesting book, I look for another interesting book to read. Another important point is that I borrow books from the library. If you try to buy the books you are interested in, there are many books you don’t get a chance to read. If you read during your commute and in your spare time, you can read a book every two days. It is important to read just like you play games or spend time online.
Q. What type of books do you read?A. I don’t discriminate, but I especially read a lot of books on history. I like books that are centered on a single event or a person. I’m especially interested in the World War II, so I have read “The Origins of the Second World War” and “The Meaning of Hitler.”
Q. Of the books that you read, which book made the deepest impression on you?
A. “The Right Not to be Hurt” by Shinjoo Kang. I read the book three times when I was a freshman and I still keep it at home. I recommended the books to my close friends. It allows you to think about how often we are hurt by the inhumane society without knowing.
