On March 2, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) announced that it had established the Sanghuh College of Liberal Arts, named after the university’s founder Dr. Seok-chang Yoo, and revamped its liberal arts curriculum. For students entering KU from the spring semester of 2016, the graduation requirement for liberal arts courses increased from 15 to 23 academic credits. The goal is to help students become more creative and well-rounded as well as to promote global citizenship. The new curriculum is composed of core and advanced liberal arts classes. Core liberal arts courses focus on foreign language and writing to improve communication skills, career development and entrepreneurship, and using software. All students must take either a Chinese or English class to graduate. For writing, students are given the option between Critical Thinking and Debates or Creative Thinking and Expressions. On the other hand, advanced liberal arts classes are also divided into three areas—enhancing logical thinking, fostering academic knowledge and character, and raising global citizens. A total of 168 advanced liberal arts courses are available, and all students must take two courses in each of the three areas.
