Konkuk University’s commencement ceremony took place at the New Millennium Hall on February 22, 2016. More than 5,000 graduate and undergraduate students from the main campus in Seoul and the GLOCAL campus in Chungju received their degrees. In addition to the 157 doctoral degrees, 770 master’s degrees, and 4,318 undergraduate degrees conferred, Reverend Bokgyu Choi of the Korea Central Church received an honorary degree. Reverend Choi had to cut short his studies when he was a second year student at KU’s political science department to enlist in the military during the Korean War. He later became the first pastor among Korean churches to establish medical missions and promoted blood and organ donations.
During the ceremony, KU President Heeyoung Song advised students to “live in a future-oriented manner” and emphasized that they should become intellectuals who always look after those who are suffering in the community. Kyung-hee Kim, chairperson of the Konkuk University Foundation, also congratulated the students and urged them to become leaders that are respected by their peers for being able to say “no” to injustice. Various awards, such as the President’s Award and Dean’s Award, were given to 91 students, including Jinyoung Park of the English language and literature department who graduated with the highest GPA among all undergraduate students. Actor Jong-suk Lee of the Department of Film received the President’s Achievement Award for his activities as a “KU Ambassador.”
Meanwhile, the main campus was decorated with approximately 1,000 banners made by current students to congratulate the graduates in their departments and activity clubs. Many of the banners took ideas from popular buzzwords and movies. The red carpet and photo booth introduced by civil engineering students last year were extended to the entire College of Engineering this year.
