In partnership with the Africa Future Foundation, a medical team led by Dr. Dong-man Seo of Konkuk University Medical Center’s thoracic and cardiovascular surgery department performed heart surgeries for ten children in Zimbabwe during February 10-17, 2016. An open heart surgery performed at the University of Zimbabwe Hospital on a 10-year old girl suffering a ventricular septal defect was the first time such surgery took place in the country in 12 years. The medical team also provided education and training to local medical staff on surgeries and follow up procedures. David Parirenyatwa, the Minister of Health and Child Care, said that the surgery was a new beginning and a groundbreaking event that gives hope to children who previously had to go to India, China, and other countries to receive treatment.
