On January 27, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) awarded an honorary doctorate in social welfare to Mr. Sim Lee, Chairman of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, in recognition of his contribution to enhance the welfare of senior citizens and pioneering in philanthropic activities. The ceremony was attended by KU Foundation Chairperson Kyung-hee Kim, Booyoung Group Chairman Lee Joon-keun, Daekyo Group Chairman Kang Young-joong, as well as KU professors and students.Chairman Lee is a KU alumnus, having graduated in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in law. He was the CEO of Housing Culture, a publishing company, as well as the president of the Korea Magazine Association. In 2010, Chairman Lee became the 15th chairman of the Korean Senior Citizens Association and was reelected for another term after five years. Recently, donated to 100 million won each to two foundations that assists and provide medical support to senior citizens. During the ceremony, KU President Heeyoung Song praised Mr. Lee. “I am delighted to award this degree to Chairman Lee who exemplified KU’s three virtues of sincerity, fidelity, and righteousness through his dedication to the country and society,” he said. In response, Chairman Lee expressed his gratitude and said he will continue to work actively so that senior citizens can play an important role in the Korean society.
