During January 5-16, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) organized an English camp for local elementary students. The camp was hosted by the Gwangjin-gu government as part of an effort to reduce expenses spent on English camps or language studies overseas. Local fourth and fifth graders were chosen to participate in the program on a first-come-first-serve basis, while priority was given to students joining for the first time. To allocate more opportunities to students coming from low-income families, 10% of the students were selected based on income-levels and participated free of charge. As the Gwangjin-gu government paid for approximately 60% of the tuition, most students were able to participate without imposing a heavy financial burden on their families.
KU’s foreign faculty provided high-quality lessons from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m for two weeks at the university’s language institute. All lessons were conducted in English. In addition to English lessons in classrooms, the students also took a field trip to Gyeongwondang on campus and observed a moot court at KU’s law school.
